Case Study: Cottage door made from a 100 year old tree

A lovely fella in Chorley, Lancashire called me after finding my website and had been looking at some of the doors I had made. He wanted a new front door to his cottage and said he already had the wood to use for it. I said OK, I’ll drive across the border, to the red rose of Lancashire, to check it out.

The wood was stored in Norman’s coal yard and jokingly said “my son had always wanted to burn it as it was just taking up too much space”. The tree was actually cut down after the long summer of 1976 and Norman decided to store the wood in his coal yard, because one day, it will be useful for ‘something’.

I said the wood was perfect. It had rested for over 40 years and the water moisture had been lost. The wood was discoloured but it was full of character. I could not wait to take the wood back home to the white rose of Yorkshire, to start working on the door.

It was a real pleasure to work with Norman. And I’m so glad his son never got to burn the wood! These are projects I love to work on. And the end result, looks beautiful.
